Tummy tuck

Does your tummy give an unfit look? … Go for tummy tuck…

Women in the late thirties after pregnancy can have loose skin and excess of fat in the lower abdomen that fails to retract to its pre-pregnancy appearance. In males the abdominal fat is intra-abdominal though selective candidates with excess skin can be suitable for external reduction. Sometimes, after substantial weight loss the abdominal skin may become flaccid.
Abdominoplasty also tightens the muscles that have been separated and weakened by pregnancy giving patient more youthful appearance, strength and confidence. The procedure may somewhat improve the appearance of stretch marks, especially those located below the navel (typically seen following pregnancy)

What is tummy – tuck or abdominoplasty?

Tummy tuck is a procedure to remove the excess sagging abdominal skin along with tightening of the abdominal wall muscles to restore the tone.

When do you need tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck helps in conditions enumerated below

  • Excess or sagging abdominal skin
  • Abdomen that protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of your body
  • Gross laxity and separation of abdominal muscles
  • Excess fatty tissue that is concentrated in your abdomen

This operation is helpful especially for

  • Women with lax abdominal skin after pregnancy
  • Abdominal laxity due to aging
  • Laxity after excessive weight loss or following bariatric surgery

A combination liposuction and tummy tuck may be necessary for those with excessive fat with extra skin laxity.

What do we assess during your personal consultation?

During consultation we would like to know what your expectations from the surgery are. After thorough history and examination, we will be able to determine whether these goals can be achieved.

How will my plastic surgeon evaluate me for abdominoplasty?

Your plastic surgeon may examine your abdomen while you are standing as well as lying down. Your skin tone and the degree of loose skin in the abdominal region will be assessed. Your surgeon also will evaluate the amount of excess fat in your abdomen and the condition of your abdominal muscles.

You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, pregnancies, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.

What do you do in tummy tuck?

It takes approximately 2 to 4 hours for this surgery and it requires general anaesthesia. The usual hospital stay is 2 to 5 days depending upon the individual’s response to the surgery.

During this process of lifting the abdominal skin from the muscles, the umbilicus is relocated and excess sagging skin excised. Stitch line come as a fine line horizontally. Stitches are under the skin and absorbable and strengthen with tapes and no need of stitch removal. The final scar is hidden in undergarments.

Sometimes, abdominoplasty is combined with liposuction (fat suctioning) for abdomen contouring.

How is postop recovery?

Usually, the patient can resume routine work in 2 to 4 weeks, whilst strenuous and sports activity should be postponed till the 6th to 8th week, the scars fade and flatten by 3 months to 2 years depending upon individual’s tendency.

Smoking and consuming alcohol must be totally stopped two weeks before the operation, as they impair wound healing.

How long term is the result?

Though the results of tummy tuck are technically permanent, few patients tend to gain weight (normal food habits/ lack of exercise) and in those with disproportionate weight gain may accumulate fat in the abdomen again.

What are the complications or side effects?

Tummy tuck is pretty safe surgery if done meticulously and patient follow instruction carefully.

Major complications are fairly uncommon. Some patients may develop seroma, bleeding, infection, stretch scar or suture line dehiscence. Wound infection is another rare complication. These usually settle well with conservative treatment.
